How Is Age Calculated? Years, Months & Days Explained
Working out someone's age sounds trivial — subtract the birth year from this year and you're done. But that quick trick is often wrong by a year, and it says nothing about months and days. Calculating an exact age means doing real calendar arithmetic: accounting for which months are longer, whether a leap day sits in between, and what happens when a birthday hasn't arrived yet this year. This guide explains how age is actually calculated, step by step.

The naive method (and why it fails)
The most common shortcut is:
Age = Current year − Birth year
For someone born in 1990, in 2026 this gives 36. But it's only correct if their birthday has already passed this year. If they were born in December 1990 and it's July 2026, they are still 35 — their 36th birthday hasn't happened yet. The year-subtraction method ignores the month and day entirely, so it's routinely off by one.
Exact age has to compare the full date — year, month and day — not just the year.
The correct method: years, months, then days
A precise age is expressed as years, months and days. The reliable way to compute it is:
- Count the whole years that have passed since the birth date.
- Count the whole months that have passed since the last completed year.
- Count the remaining days since the last completed month.
Rather than juggle three separate counters (which breaks on month-ends, as we'll see), the robust approach used by the Age Calculator is:
- Find the largest whole number of months between the birth date and today.
- Convert that to years and months (12 months = 1 year).
- Measure the residual days between "birth date + that many months" and today.
A worked example
Take a birth date of 15 May 1990 and today as 7 July 2026:
- Whole months from 15 May 1990 to 7 July 2026 = 433 months (because 15 July 2026 hasn't arrived, we stop at 15 June 2026).
- 433 months = 36 years and 1 month.
- From 15 June 2026 to 7 July 2026 = 22 days.
So the exact age is 36 years, 1 month and 22 days — not the "36" the naive method gives, and with the month/day detail it can't provide.
Why leap years matter
A leap year adds a 29th day to February every four years (with the well-known century exceptions — see below). Over a long life, those extra days add up: someone who is 40 years old has lived through about 10 leap days. Any accurate age calculation has to count them.
This matters most for the "total" figures — your age in total days, weeks, hours, minutes and seconds. If a calculation assumed every year was 365 days, it would undercount by roughly one day every four years. The leap-year rule
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 — except century years, which must be divisible by 400:
- 2024 → leap (divisible by 4)
- 2000 → leap (divisible by 400)
- 1900 → not leap (divisible by 100 but not 400)
- 2023 → not leap
This is the Gregorian calendar rule that virtually the whole world uses today.
The tricky case: month-end birthdays
Consider someone born on 31 January. One month later is… what? February has no 31st. The sensible convention is to clamp to the end of the month: 31 January + 1 month = 28 February (or 29 February in a leap year). Naive "borrow a month" arithmetic gets this wrong and can produce negative days.
The Age Calculator handles this by clamping month-ends, so someone born on 31 January is correctly shown as "1 month old" on 28/29 February, and "1 month and 1 day" on 1 March.
Turning age into bigger units
Once you know the exact number of calendar days you've lived, the other totals follow directly:
- Total weeks = total days ÷ 7 (rounded down)
- Total hours = total days × 24
- Total minutes = total days × 1,440
- Total seconds = total days × 86,400
- Total months = the whole-month count from the age calculation

Chronological age vs other "ages"
The method above gives your chronological age — the actual time elapsed since birth. It's the figure used for legal age, school admission, retirement eligibility, and forms of all kinds.
